About the Program
Why Peace by PEACE is right for you!
What makes us different?
Our program has been working with children in the GTA since 1997, an amazing 18 years! We have worked with over 12,000 elementary aged students and their teachers.
Peace by PEACE differentiates itself from other similar programs by basing our units on games and activities, rather than lessons and demonstrations. We opt to use skits instead of statistics; discussions instead of lectures. By immersing students in a safe environment, our volunteers encourage sharing individual experiences, and teach children how to confront the conflicts in their lives with creativity and compassion.
Peace by PEACE updates its curriculum annually to ensure that we are addressing the relevant issues that face young people today, such as building self-esteem, anti-bullying and understanding the effects of mass media.
When does the Program Run?
The program begins the first week back in January, for 90-minutes a week and runs for 11 weeks (excluding March Break).
Who are our volunteers?
Our volunteers are an extremely talented and enthusiastic group of university students from the University of Toronto: St. George campus and York University: Glendon and Keele campuses. All volunteers undergo mandatory training in the fall to prepare them for teaching in the classroom and to familiarize them with our curriculum. Every volunteer undergoes a Police Vulnerable Screening Check before they are allowed into the classroom.
How much does the program cost? What does the cost go towards?
The program costs $350 ($300 if you register before September 30) for each classroom in your school.** This money goes directly back into the classroom in the form of weekly materials and take home letters.
** Subsidies may be available on a case by case basis.
What is required of you?
Teachers must remain in the classroom for the duration of the Peace by PEACE session. We ask that classroom materials such as the blackboard, chart paper and markers are made available to the volunteers. The teacher should remain available for contact by both their volunteer and executive teams by email.
